Hello and welcome back to Season 4, Episode 2 of the PCOS Revolution podcast!
I’m so glad to get back to our weekly schedule now that the holiday madness has calmed down a bit so if you’re subscribed to our podcast you’ll see a new episode now every Tuesday morning in your podcast feed.
As get into January, I thought it might be time for some reflection on some our past episodes. Now if you haven’t had a chance to listen to them yet, not to worry…today I’ve put together a special list after polling our team for their most favorite episodes and I’ve included them here in our show notes for you to listen to at your convenience…so today’s episode is short and sweet.
But before we begin I just want to let you in on something that I’ve been secretly working on for several years now and it’s finally time to let you know.
It’s probably no surprise to you treating PCOS at the root takes time and effort. Even when working with our acupuncture patients one-on-one, there just isn’t enough time to really sit down every week and make sure we’re on the right track with diet, supplements, herbs and self care, not mention discussing all that’s involved with hormone testing and BBT or temperature charting. Now I’ve been searching for a way to fill in this gap and help as many women with PCOS as I can, so I developed The PCOS Revolution Academy which is a 100% completely online program that goes deeper into PCOS than any program I’ve seen.
I want to invite you to become a founding member at www.thepcosrevolution.com where I will be holding your hand every step of the way, month after month helping you get your PCOS symptoms under control once and for all.
Each month we’re going to cover different topics through our live Q& A sessions inside of our private community to discuss issues like:
-Improving your fertility and regulating your cycle naturally using the powerful combination of the right supplements and time-tested Chinese herbal medicine strategies along with specific acupressure points
-The perfect strategies for getting rid of fatigue and upping your libido along with learning precisely the right amount of portions and how to eliminate cravings at their source
-Getting your exercise and meal planning in place so that you could incorporate it easily into your daily routine?
And most importantly feeling confident that for the rest of your life (even during pregnancy and beyond), you had a plan that you could rely on!
I’m so looking forward to getting to know you and I want to make it easy for you to join so here is a special savings for you as one of my listeners…just use the code PODCAST to receive 20% off your first month! Ok so let’s get back to the show!
Now some of you already know that we have a clinic in Fort Lauderdale that works in an integrative way with PCOS and infertility. I have the good fortune to have a wonderful team at FCW and they make it possible for me to do this show with you. I can’t thank them enough for all that they do with our terrific patients so thank you to Dr. Marilyn Aracena, OMD, our fabulous acupuncturist and doctor of oriental medicine, Josee Jacobs, our licensed massage therapist and Liliana Valente our clinic manager, you are amazing!
So I asked them the other day what their favorite three, can’t-miss episodes were and listed them here so all you have to do is click on the link to take you to that episode in the show notes. As a side note, I’ve really enjoyed interviewing each and every one of our guests and learned so much from them and hope you have too along the way!
As part of today’s episode, I thought I would give you a little behind the scenes info about each of the interviews so you could have a better idea of what happened when the episode was recorded. I’m a big fan of opening the curtain and love to know the process in some of the podcasts that I listen to so I thought you would to! SO here goes:
Our first favorite episode pick (in no particular order) is Reversing Weight Gain and Adrenal Fatigue with Dr Iris Crawford.
I want to first take you a little bit behind the scenes for episode 2 of our first season with Dr. Iris Crawford. Iris is a naturopathic physician whom I became friends with through a mastermind group I was part of. I had just started my podcast and really wanted Iris to talk about her struggles with losing weight and helping women with PCOS in her practice do the same.
So Iris’ story begins with being burned out and overweight after finishing medical school—even as a health expert couldn’t seem to get her own health turned around. She then discovered firsthand the powerful impact that stress has, especially on women.
Now, after years of research and medical practice seeing hundreds of women successfully lose weight and get their energy back, she believes that high-achieving women aren’t getting the help they need to stay healthy and happy. This episode honed in on why weight loss is not just about calories in and calories out. We also focused on adrenal burnout and repairing the metabolism which is often the missing link to successful and sustained weight loss. Since this was my first podcast interview for the show, I was a little stiff and robotic because I really wanted to make sure the interview went perfectly but I accidentally deleted my audio somehow! So I actually had to go back and record my voice and have someone edit the episode to sync with Iris’s voice. If any of you do any work with podcasts, this really is not advisable! But I couldn’t bring my self to tell Iris about my mistake and re-record the whole episode so I spent a lot of time fixing my mistake. Anyway, we had a laugh about it later but I think you’ll notice Iris’ passion for women’s health and weight struggles in this episode really comes through, so definitely its worth checking out if you haven’t listened to it already.
Our staff’s next pick was also from Season 1, Episode 4 entitled, PCOS In-Depth with Dr. Kenneth Gelman.
Dr. Gelman Kenneth M. Gelman, M.D. F.A.C.E received his medical degree with honors, Alpha Omega Alpha, from New York Medical College, followed by residency at Albert Einstein College of medicine. He subsequently completed an Endocrinology fellowship at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York. Aside from being an amazing doctor, he was one of the pioneers in the treatment of PCOS who’s been working with our patients with PCOS for several years here in South Florida.
This episode was actually a Facebook Live that we did for our patients on our Florida Complete Wellness Facebook page and was so good I just had to include it as a podcast episode. So if you want a better understanding of PCOS from a reproductive endocrinologist point of view then definitely I encourage you to check this one out!
This was also among one of the first Facebook Live interviews that I did and I was also more than a little nervous. I’m still not 100% comfortable on video, it’s something that I’ve struggled with and I always have a fear of technology and that something will crash…it happened to me more than once on webinars and other live video so besides that I really love this interview for so many reasons. We’ve had so much success working with Dr. Gelman and the doctors at IVFMD over the past decade. You can see that he really cares about educating his patients and is a big advocate of incorporating acupuncture and supplements when needed into his patients treatment plans. He’s also got a great sense of humor which really helps when dealing with some of the sadness that comes from infertility!
If you want to know more about the details of where PCOS comes from, how the diagnosis has evolved over time and really treating it at the root, this is the interview for you!
The final favorite episode of 2018 was Episode 5 of Season 2 with Dr. Christiane Northrup entitled The Truth About Reversing PCOS.
Now if you haven’t heard of Dr. Northrup, she is the world-renown author of:
In this episode, Dr. Northrup and I discuss what’s missing in the typical treatment of PCOS and women’s health and what to do about it.
Dr. Christiane Northrup is a visionary in women’s health whose accomplishments include being:
– A practicing board-certified OB/GYN physician for 25 years
– An internationally respected writer and speaker
– A three-time New York Times bestselling author
– Leading authority in the field of women’s health and wellness, which includes the unity of mind, body, emotions, and spirit
– And known as the “rebel, rockstar and authority on what can go right with the female body”
Now, a little bit about the behind the scenes info on this episode. If you listen to it, you might pick up on the fact that I’m more than a little nervous! As I mention to Dr. Northrup during the interview, she was the one who inspired me to leave my premed studies and pursue a more integrative approach at the age of 19 by switching my focus completely and starting Traditional Chinese Medicine school. Her book Women’s Bodies, Women’s Wisdom not only changed the course of my path in life but also brought so much clarity into why I was struggling with severe pain, PMS and irregular cycles brought on by PCOS in my teens and early twenties.
So fun fact is the morning of the interview, my internet went down so I couldn’t record from my home office studio. I completely went into panic mode and drove an hour in horrible Miami traffic to my clinic, raced into an empty room with no patients, and plugged in my laptop and headset just in time to start the interview. I knew that there was no way I was going to cancel this interview. Dr. Northrup was actually so gracious in granting an interview to me right in the middle of her new movie coming out and the launch of her new book Dodging Energy Vampires and I had been so excited about getting to talk to my mentor (even though she had no clue how much she had influenced my life) so you can probably tell from the nervousness in my voice that day! I was like a little kid meeting her favorite super hero for the first time! Long story short, I almost cried when I started the interview, mostly from pure joy and relief that I actually arrived in time to record and the interview went pretty smoothly from there.
SO that’s my embarrassing behind the scenes moment for that interview..one that I will definitely never forget for the rest of my life.
So if you happen to have missed that interview, I hope you get a chance to check it out and hear Dr. Northrup’s unique take on how she looks at PCOS in an integrative way and definitely if you’ve never read any of her books, I highly recommend and a book called Making Life Easy about life flow with ease, and truly feeling your best, is about far more than physical health; also about having a healthy emotional life and spiritual life.
So this has been so much fun sharing this with you and I also want to remind you to check out our brand new program The PCOS Rev Academy at thepcosrevolution.com where I will be helping you every step of the way along with the support of our amazing community, month after month to get your PCOS symptoms under control once and for all. just use the code PODCAST to receive 20% off your first month!
